Winning Wheels

Winning Wheels residents can enjoy the outdoors on a specially-adapted "Duet" bicycle. Residents and staff both enjoy this one-on-one time together and the opportunity to get out on the town!

Last year, a team of Winning Wheels residents and staff participated in the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI). It was a 450-mile winding, up-and-down test complete with heat, humidity and hills. The "Duet" bicycle operated beautifully and the teamwork that was present throughout the week-long ride made all the difference in the team's success.

Back at the facility, we kept track of the team's progress on a large map. Throughout the week, all activity ceased at 3 p.m. in anticipation of the team's daily phone report to update the rest of us on their progress.

By the end of the week, the tired, sun-blistered crew had pedaled the entire 450 miles, proving to everyone, disabled or not, that when there is a will, there is a way.
