Big Meadows is among the first nursing homes in the nation to adopt the “Eden Alternative” concept, which represents a major philosophical and programmatic change that diminishes barriers to growth in the nursing home by surrendering the institutional point of view, creating a more homelike environment, and making plants, pets and children the focal points around which daily life in the nursing home revolves. We emphasize a social model rather than a medical model, and we believe that companionship is the key antidote for loneliness and boredom. We also believe that being of use, and being able to give as well as receive care makes being in need an easier burden to bear.
Children frequent our outdoor playground and indoor “Kiddie Corner”, where there are plenty of books and games to share with elderly loved ones. Residents participate in exercising, grooming and feeding the pets, caring for the plants, and leading intergenerational programs. Big Meadows is located in the Northwest Illinois community of Savanna, a historical town on the banks of the Mississippi River. Nestled among rolling hills and beautiful trees, deer, birds and other wild life can be viewed from the resident rooms. Residents can even watch the animals in our nearby pasture, or look out upon the flowering gardens in our scenic courtyard. Our recently redecorated interior has added an atmosphere of warmth and hominess. Residents can relax on a comfortable armchair or settee in our lobby areas, or relax by the fireplace in our dining room. Come visit us and experience the “Eden Alternative“ difference.
